The SNP Government has revealed that the152nd Open Championship held at Royal Troon earlier this summer generated an estimated £43.8 million in economic benefit for Ayrshire.
With over 250,000 spectators in attendance, more than half of whom travelled from outside Scotland, the benefit to Scotland’s economy was £87.3 million.
This year’s event adds to the legacy of The Open in Scotland, bringing the total economic impact from the ten stagings since 2005 to an incredible £1,360 million. This demonstrates just how important The Open is to our national and local economies, as well as to Scotland's global reputation as a premier destination for major golf events.
In recognition of the importance of the championship, the Scottish Government has committed to a renewed long-term agreement with the Royal and Ancient.
This agreement will ensure that Scotland continues to host major championships regularly until 2034, including five more stagings of The Open. This is great news not just for golf enthusiasts but for all of us who benefit from the tourism and local business growth that these events bring.
The agreement also includes an exclusive benefits package that will enhance Scotland's international profile and support key government policies, particularly in areas such as sustainability and public health.
Events like The Open not only drive tourism but also allow us to showcase Scotland as a world-class stage for major events. We can look forward to the continued growth and prosperity that comes with hosting these prestigious championships in our beautiful country. Here’s to the future of golf in Scotland!
