Yesterday I had a very constructive meeting hosted by Derek Pierce, Managing Director of J & D Pierce (Contracts) Ltd in Glengarnock.
J & D Pierce employ over 350 people and are renowned not only for their high quality structural steel products but their first class in-house training.
Accompanied by representatives of Scottish Enterprise, Ayrshire College, Skills Development Scotland, University of West of Scotland, JobCenre Plus and North Ayrshire Council’s Business Support and Development Department, Derek gave us a tour of his state-of-the-art facilities, in which J & D Pierce has invested £16.5 million over the last three years. We then had a very positive discussion on how we could up-skill workers in North Ayrshire to take advantage of likely engineering employment opportunities at Hunterston, which we anticipate will transpire over the next two years.
