Last week in Parliament, I asked the Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government, Aileen Campbell MSP, what have Scottish ministers done to protect local government budgets in Scotland from collapsing like those in England under the Tories and in Wales under Labour.
Referring to this year’s Scottish local government settlement with overall funding of more than £11.6 billion, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted that - in stark contrast with the real-terms budget reductions of 28 % between 2011 and 2018 elsewhere in the UK - the Scottish Government has endeavoured to protect and treat fairly local government in Scotland.
