The Dangers of a No-Deal Brexit for Scotland's Red Meat Sector

On Thursday in the Chamber, Kenneth voiced his concern about the impact that that could have on exporters and on livestock farmers in particular who, according to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, could face European Union tariffs of 70 per cent on beef and 45 per cent on lamb post-Brexit.

He asked the Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy, Fergus Ewing MSP, what the Scottish Government is doing to help our exporters of food and livestock find alternative markets in that scenario.

Mr Ewing referred to his weekly discussions with exporters and their representatives, the Scottish Government resilience room and the provision of export assistance in a number of ways, including an element of financial support.

The Cabinet Secretary did remind the Chamber that there is only so much the Scottish Government can do in case of a no-deal scenario - which would have extremely serious counsequences for the red meat sector, saying:

"That is why no deal must be removed from the table. It can be removed and not to do so is not just a run-of-the-mill Government mistake.

"There is no Government in the world that does not make mistakes, but this is negligence, recklessness and culpability, and it needs to be sorted now."
