Success of the Smoking Ban

On Wednesday in the Chamber, Kenneth highlighted the fact that the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005 has been a resounding success with, in the year following its introduction alone, an 86 per cent reduction in passive smoking in bars, a 17 per cent fall in heart attacks and an 18 per cent decline in child asthma hospital admissions. Public Health Minister Joe FitzPatrick MSP confirmed the immediate success of the legislation and noted the role in this played by Kenneth, who originally started working on legislation to ban smoking from some public places during the first term of Parliament.
