SNP Government Funding Helps to Build Council Houses in Largs

Construction work has begun on a £19.5 million Largs council housing development, made possible with a £7.26 million grant from the SNP Government.

The Flatt Road development will comprise 122 homes, including 54 for general needs, 22 supported accommodation units, 18 amenity bungalows and a 28-unit sheltered housing complex.

The sheltered housing complex – which will incorporate a community hub – will include safety monitors and sensors, voice controlled lighting and heating systems and facilities to encourage physical activity and provide health and wellbeing benefits. There will also be a biomass district heating system to provide sustainable, affordable heating and hot water to every home.

An adjacent plot of land will be used for the Scottish Futures Trust’s Home Ownership Made Easy programme, which helps first time buyers get on the property ladder by becoming a co-owner of a home for just £5,000, while older people can co-own an accessible property for just £40,000. Both include a range of sustainability technologies to reduce carbon emissions and alleviate fuel poverty and a maintenance package, to help provide efficient and easy ownership.

Kenneth Gibson MSP commented:

“I am pleased that, like so many other communities in North Ayrshire, Largs will benefit from the SNP Government’s programme to deliver 50,000 affordable homes, including 35,000 available for social rent, from 2016-2021 and supporting thousands of construction jobs in the process.

“I am grateful to the Scottish Futures Trust for working with NAC officers to help provide easy access onto the property ladder for people who want to buy in a climate of Tory austerity and pension raids coming from the UK Tory Government.

“This year, Finance Secretary Derek Mackay MSP increased the Housing budget in Scotland from £893.6 million in 2018 to £967.2 million in 2019/20, a rise of almost 11%.

“The SNP Government has also invested over £1.2 billion in Help to Buy and the Low-cost Initiative for First Time Buyers (LIFT) and exceeded its commitment in 2017 to support up to 3,500 households into affordable home ownership, including approximately 2,500 first-time buyers.

“We are keen to build a better Scotland, where owning your own home doesn’t have to just be an aspiration. It can become a reality.”
