SNP Government Launches Support Package for Scotland’s EU Nationals

To ensure that European Union (EU) citizens can continue to build their lives in Scotland, the SNP Government has launched its Stay in Scotland package of support, to advise people throughout the process of applying to the UK Tory Government’s EU settlement scheme.

Stay in Scotland includes the provision of a support and advice service for citizens affected by the EU Settlement Scheme who may have more complex needs or face particular challenges with their application, such as those who find it difficult to collect the evidence needed to apply.

This support service is delivered by Citizens Advice Scotland, which will administer a national helpline, part-funded with £800,000 from the SNP Government. Specially-trained, qualified advisers can provide free, confidential and impartial advice from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. The helpline number is 0800 916 9847.

Information materials have now been sent to GP practices, nurseries, libraries, and community centres across Scotland to raise awareness about the support available. These will also soon be available from the office of Kenneth Gibson MSP.

Minister for Europe, Migration and International Development Ben Macpherson MSP said:

“The SNP Government has a simple message for EU citizens in Scotland: you are welcome here, we want you to stay and we will help you to stay.”

“The service will be particularly helpful for more vulnerable and hard to reach groups, who may find it difficult to apply online without assistance, including people living in remote and rural areas.”

Kenneth Gibson MSP added:

“With so many unanswered questions about the UK Tory Government’s Brexit process, it is vital that EU citizens understand their rights and have access to free support to help them stay in Scotland where their presence is highly valued.

“Citizens Advice Scotland have 80 years of experience in delivering advice for those who need it most, so they are uniquely positioned to deliver the trusted and impartial require that people need through what can be a needlessly arduous process, thanks to the flawed scheme designed by the UK Government.”
