Health Secretary Jeane Freeman MSP has announced a pay award of 2.5% backdated to 01 April 2019 for medical and dental staff, general medical practitioners and general dental practitioner in NHS Ayrshire & Arran and all other Scottish NHS boards.
Ms Freeman said:
“It’s the continued hard work and dedication of staff which makes our NHS the treasured institution it is and this uplift demonstrates that we fully value all our staff and the important contribution they make."
“It’s crucial we continue to not only recruit and build our future NHS workforce, but also retain expertise. This announcement means that junior doctors working on typical rotas in Scotland can be up to £6,000 a year better off than their English equivalents, and our specialty doctors, associate specialist doctors and consultants are the best paid in the UK."
“This will help ensure that NHS Scotland remains an attractive employment option for medical and dental staff.”

“In December, figures from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) revealed that on average, Scottish public sector workers earn an average of £463 more each year than their English counterparts.
“The SNP Government had, of course, already ended the UK Tory Government’s public sector pay cap, giving an immediate 6.5% pay increase rise to police and a minimum of 9% to nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and paramedics over three years – the highest pay uplift in the UK.”
The 2.5% pay uplift is to be included in September 2019 salaries. Backdated payments to 01 April 2019 will follow.
