SNP Government Donates £1 million to Waverley Paddle Steamer

The last sea-going paddle steamer in the world will receive £1 million of SNP Government funding to help it sail again, Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop MSP has announced.

This brings the total raised to £1.9 million out of the £2.3 million required to carry out the necessary renovations.

The Waverley Paddle Steamer has transported millions of passengers to a variety of locations throughout the UK since its launch in 1947 but is currently out-of-service and urgently requires new boilers.

SNP Government funding will go towards replacing the twin boilers and other necessary maintenance, such as replacing the main electrical switchboard, new cabling and installing new generators.

Ms Hyslop said:

“The Waverley has delighted generations of locals and visitors throughout its history and I am pleased to announce this significant financial commitment to help it sail again.

“In 2020 Scotland’s coasts and waters will be celebrated with a programme of activity designed to inspire more people than ever before to explore and experience our unrivalled shores. I look forward to seeing the Waverley, such a key part of our maritime and cultural history, back in service and able to play a central part in that celebration.”

Kenneth Gibson MSP added:

“The Waverley Paddle Steamer has been and should be a regular visitor to Largs, Cumbrae, Arran and throughout the Firth of Clyde. I am delighted that the Cabinet Secretary is supporting this campaign to the tune of £1 million – a giant leap towards reaching its goal.

“This funding, in addition to the £0.7 million the SNP Government has given to North Ayrshire Council for the Coig tourism trail so far, once again shows a consistent commitment to North Ayrshire and Firth of Clyde as a tourism destination.

“Now that the lion’s share of funding has been donated, I have no doubt that the remainder will be raised. I’m surely not the only one who can’t wait to board the renovated Waverley next year!”

General Manager of Waverley Excursions Paul Semple commented:

“The trustees are delighted that Scottish Ministers have recognised the Waverley’s importance to Scotland’s heritage and tourism with this generous grant towards our Boiler Refit Appeal.”
