New figures from the Annual Population Survey show that 336,000 young people aged 16-24 years were in employment in Scotland in October 2018 to September 2019.
The employment rate for young people was 59% higher than a year ago (57.9%).
In the same period, 34,000 young people aged 16-24 years were unemployed. The unemployment rate for young people was 9.1% lower than a year ago (9.5%).
Kenneth Gibson MSP said:
“It is heartening that, despite so much economic turmoil and Brexit uncertainty, that more and more of our young people are in employment and fewer are unemployed. A large percentage are also in full-time education.
“Such robust figures augur well both for the Scottish economy and our young people themselves.”
The figures released were produced by independent statistical staff free from any political interference, in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
The latest Annual Population Survey data for October 2018 to September 2019 is compared with the annual data the year before, October 2017 to September 2018.
