SNP Government Establishes Economic Recovery Advisory Group

Scottish Ministers have set up an independent advisory group to provide expert economic advice in response to the coronavirus crisis.

Membership will draw on expertise across regions and sectors, led by senior businessman and government strategic adviser Benny Higgins. Renowned academic Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli is one of the first appointees.

Economy secretary Fiona Hyslop MSP said:

“Our response to COVID-19 is saving countless lives but I am deeply aware that this is having an economic effect that is already being felt.

“We want Scotland to recover as quickly as possible from this outbreak. Rapidly rebuilding a resilient economy in a way that supports Scotland’s wellbeing and transition toward a greener, net-zero country will be vital.

“None of us should be under any illusions about the scale of task ahead and no government will have all the answers.

“That is why independent advice from leading economists will be so important as we face the challenge of long-term recovery.”

Kenneth Gibson MSP commented:

“Now is the time to prepare for economic recovery by looking forward to when the pandemic subsides.

“We must recognise that this crisis will continue to have a profound impact on our economy for a long time and act accordingly.

“Benny Higgins and Professor Muscatelli bring a wealth of expertise and I am confident they will be joined by others to help expedite the recovery process of Scotland’s economy.”

Further appointments and details of the group’s remit will be published in due course.

Initial proposals will be submitted to the SNP Government by the end of June.
