I was delighted that Arran Outdoor Education Centre has been saved from potential closure, ahead of North Ayrshire Council (NAC) finalising its budget on 01 March.
While the council has an obligation to consider each of their spending priorities, the rumours surrounding the potential closure and sale of Clauchlands were alarming to me, islanders and people across North Ayrshire who have either used this invaluable resource or have hopes that their children can enjoy the same opportunities and experiences the centre afforded them.
I visited Clauchlands on 27 January and have been in close contact with islanders and NAC regarding my concerns.
The campaign to preserve the centre – which was heard loud and clear by NAC – has been a credit to Arranachs and people who care about this important centre.
I particularly wish to thank Howard Wood OBE and the Community of Arran Seabed Trust for their determined efforts.
I am pleased that Councillors have committed to ensuring funding will be made available to safeguard Clauchlands’ future.
