Community Hearing Support Service ‘Hear to Help’

This morning I visited Action on Hearing Scotland’s (AoHS) Community Hearing Support Service in Saltcoats Library; ‘Hear to Help.’ There I spoke for an hour to the fully trained volunteers, service users and AoHS staff.

In the photo, long-standing volunteer Ann Farrell is showing me how she changes a battery and re-fits a hearing aid.

In my constituency community hearing volunteers provide drop in services at Ardrossan, Beith, Brodick, Dalry, Kilbirnie, Saltcoats libraries and at the top of ‘The Rodden’ in Shiskine.

These well-attended drop-ins save people the time, trouble and expense of having to travel, often miles, to audiology departments. Across Ayrshire around 3,000 people benefit from a service which include:

  • Collecting free hearing aid batteries

  • Tube changing (recommended every 4-6 months)

  • Learning how best to care for hearing aids

  • Finding out about different services that are available

  • Considering different hearing products and equipment
