It was heartening to join MSP colleagues and around 200 fellow SNP members in Edinburgh this morning, on the 10th anniversary of the independence referendum, to hear First Minister John Swinney MSP set out the SNP’s priority of building support for independence.
The First Minister reflected on the emotional journey of the Yes campaign. Those of us who were active will remember the excitement that had been building up to the referendum turn to heartbreak as the results came in.
The resilience of the Yes campaigners remains impressive, as independence supporters quickly regrouped and continued our efforts with renewed determination.
Many grassroots campaign groups formed in the run-up to the vote remain active, fostering new friendships and a sense of possibility that still resonates today.
As the First Minister set out, the referendum has undoubtedly left a positive legacy for Scotland.
What other democratic event have we had that has encouraged 85% participation and discussion across the country?
The First Minister set out his goal of reawakening the sense of optimism, of hope and of possibility that was so prevalent throughout Scotland in 2014 – an aim I wholeheartedly support.
