Huge Swing to SNP in Glasgow By-election

SNP candidate Chris Cunningham won the Garscadden & Scotstounhill by-election last night to secure a seat on Glasgow City Council with a huge swing from Labour. In 2012 Labour won 3 out of 4 seats in the ward, taking 62% of first preferences to the SNP’s 27%. Chris Cunningham won the by-election with 43% of first preferences. Commenting, Kenneth Gibson said: “This is an excellent result and is testament to the hard work of our candidate and activists. “Another gain from Labour, this is further confirmation that after nine years in government people continue to place their trust in the SNP and our strong record of delivery and success and our ambitious plans to keep Scotland moving forward – as well as showing that Labour are increasingly out of touch with voters in their traditional heartlands. “It gives us huge momentum ahead of next year’s council elections and not just in Glasgow. However we take absolutely nothing for granted and will keep on working hard to retain the trust of the Scottish people next year to see more SNP councillors elected here in North Ayrshire and across Scotland.”

SNP: 2135 (43%) +16 Labour: 1944 (39%) -23 Con: 510 (10%) Green: 242 (5%) UKIP: 83 (2%) Lib Dems: 97 (2%)
