The Labour Party has now said it wants to abolish the “indefensible” House of Lords.
Before we get too excited it should be noted that Labour has been promising abolition for over a century, yet when in power has done no such thing.
In government or opposition, they continue to appoint new peers, often retired or defeated MPs.
Labour currently has 173 Lords and Ladies.
Each Lord receives a £323 daily tax-free attendance allowance.
In 2020 former North Ayrshire & Arran MP Katy Clark - previously a vociferous opponent of the Lords - was “ennobled” on the recommendation of Jeremy Corbyn as Baroness Clark of Kilwinning.
Upon becoming a Regional List MSP for West Scotland, Baroness Clark’s “elevation” was put into abeyance, as she took a “leave of absence.”
There are no SNP Lords or Ladies. We too oppose the Lords but, unlike Labour, we stick to our principles.
