LOVE YOUR LIVER ROADSHOW AT THE SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT

I am backing the British Liver Trust’s vital campaigns to save lives through prevention and earlier diagnosis of liver disease and liver cancer.

I had an interesting discussion with the Liver Trust’s CEO Pamela Healy OBE during their “Love Your Liver” Roadshow stop at Holyrood today.

90% of liver disease is preventable but sadly 75% of cirrhosis patients are diagnosed at crisis point.

The SNP Government has introduced public health policies to reduce alcohol misuse and obesity including a minimum unit pricing rise taking effect on 30 September 2024. Since its introduction it is estimated that MUP has saved 268 lives and averted 899 hospital admissions each year.

Many health boards including NHS Ayrshire & Arran now have a direct and fully effective pathway in place for the early detection of liver disease.

However unfortunately liver disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Scotland in those under the age of 75.

I am pleased to say that the results of my own personal liver screener were reassuring; if you want to undergo a free, non-intrusive liver scan yourself, the Road show visits Paisley County Square on 23 May between 10am and 4pm, with no appointment necessary.
