Memories Are Better Than Dreams

Generous fundraisers have collected over £13,000 in memory of a tragic youngster who passed away last year.

Little Beth Beattie’s parents Roger and Eva were devastated when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in November 2015.

Beth had neurofibromatosis, which caused tumours to grow at the end of nerve endings. Despite multiple surgeries and chemotherapy at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children but the tumour continued to grow.

A group of dedicated volunteers has been fundraising in her name, forming Team Beth.

Last week, Team Beth and Kenneth Gibson MSP were delighted to present a cheque for £13,299.50 to Memories Are Better Than Dreams, which aims to fulfil end-of-life wishes for children and their families in Ayrshire.

This reflects the hard work of all the fundraisers during the latter half of 2016, having previously raised over £20,000 for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

Beth’s mum Eva said:

“The reason behind all of these efforts and generosity are devastating. Our best little buddy Beth, aged just four passed away in November after a year-long battle with a brain tumour. To say that we are heartbroken is the biggest understatement anyone could make. For such a small person she was bursting with fun, love and mischief. Our world is a much darker place without her.

“Team Beth’s fundraising was started as a way of staying positive after her diagnosis and during her treatment. It is now about keeping her spirit alive in the best way possible, by helping others who find themselves in the most difficult of circumstances. In 2016 we had so much wonderful support from many lovely people.

“Jennie Campbell’s Dancing School kicked thing off with a very successful summer fundraiser. We had people daft enough to complete Tough Mudder, skydive, walk the Great Glen Way and run half marathons all the while being brilliantly supported by Beth’s nursery at Riverbank in Ayr.

"We had some fabulous contributions from our friends and colleagues at ScotRail, Santander and GE Caledonian to name but a few. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone who contributed.”

Team Beth continue to fundraise for Memories Are Better Than Dreams, as voted the 2016 West Sound Cream of Ayshire ‘Best Local Charity’.

Eva added:

“We have been selling lots of charity pin badges and we hope we can reach more people with these as the year goes on as well as assisting the charity with the distribution of collecting cans across local businesses. Anyone wishing to donate online can find our BT MyDonate page at mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/teambeth

“We are holding a sponsored fire walk and ceilidh night at the Carlton Hotel on November 18. For further details look out for our Team Beth Facebook page or email teambeth@hotmail.com.”

The charity operates in Ayrshire and Arran and support families through the loss of their child.

They aim where possible is to help families make special memories towards the end of their child’s life and after their death. The help they give is tailored to each family which ensures the money raised is spent in the most efficient way possible.
