The £500,000 Road Safety Framework Fund will support innovative ideas that encourages driving at appropriate speeds, tackle issues affecting learners and qualified drivers, and better protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
The move was announced by Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity Michael Matheson MSP to support Scotland’s Road Safety Framework until 2020, which seeks to steadily reduce the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.
Applications are welcome from any organisation across Scotland looking to support road safety, before the closing date of 09 November 2018.
Projects will only receive funding if they contribute directly to the road safety outcomes outlined in the Road Safety Framework to 2020. They must remain fully sustainable once funding has concluded.
Mr Matheson said:
“Partnership working is at the heart of everything we do and is key to supporting the delivery of our framework targets but we can’t do this on our own. We want to encourage applications which are innovative and demonstrate thinking outside the box so we can continue to push for greater safety on our roads.
“We owe it to future generations to keep striving for better road safety today so we can take another step closer to our vision of no-one being killed on Scotland’s road and a greatly reduced injury rate.”
Kenneth Gibson MSP added:
“The Road Safety Framework to 2020 sets four principal casualty reduction targets to be achieved by 2020. At the milestone mark in 2015, we were already exceeding target reductions in fatalities, child fatalities and child serious injuries. On the fourth target, reducing the number of people seriously injured, there was a continued downward reduction of 39%, just missing the milestone target of 40%.
“I am glad that this additional funding has been made available to find innovative solutions to build upon this excellent progress and ensure that we meet our targets in 2020.”
