New parents in Scotland will be given a free "baby box" containing essential supplies to prepare them for the birth of their child if the SNP is re-elected next month, the party has promised.
As well as clothes, nappies and toys, the boxes will also come with a built-in mattress allowing them to be converted into a cot.
Each box will cost £100, with the scheme expected to cost around £6m a year.
The boxes have proved an enormous success in Finland, which has operated a similar scheme for more than 80 years.
