Caught on the hop by the Prime Minister’s shock General Election announcement, the Tories in Scotland are in such chaos that they have not yet found a candidate for 13 (23%) of Scottish parliamentary constituencies.
The SNP has confirmed candidates for all seats.
The following seats currently have no Tory candidate:
• Airdrie and Shotts
• Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross
• Coatbridge and Bellshill
• Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy
• Edinburgh North and Leith
• Glasgow North East
• Glenrothes and Mid-Fife
• Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West
• Lothian East
• Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke
• Na h-Eileanan an Iar
• Rutherglen
• West Dunbartonshire
There are currently seven Tory MPs in Scotland, but three are standing down.
Kenneth Gibson said:
“Four and a half years into this UK parliamentary term and the Tories are still desperately hunting for someone – anyone – to stand in almost quarter of their Scottish seats.
“It’s obvious that they feel they have no chance in any of these constituencies and lack the organisation across Scotland to select candidates early in what they knew was an election year.
“I’m sure voters in these 13 constituencies will be less than impressed by the ‘paper’ candidates Tory Central Office is set to impose upon them.”
“Maybe they should introduce conscription to obtain their own party candidates.”
