Impact on Ayrshire Rail Services of Fire Next to Central Station
Following the devastating fire on Union Street adjacent to Glasgow Central Station it has now been confirmed by Network Rail that Glasgow Central station will remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday 09 March.
The latest update on Ayrshire trains is as follows:
• Glasgow - Largs services will only operate between Largs and Kilwinning in both directions.
• Glasgow - Kilmarnock services will only operate between Kilmarnock and Barrhead in both directions.
• Glasgow - Ayr services will be reduced to hourly in both directions and will only run between Ayr and Paisley Gilmour Street calling all stations in both directions
Network Rail said:
"Glasgow Central will remain closed at least into Tuesday, while SFRS work to contain the fire on Union Street and make the area safe.
"Once that’s complete, our team need to inspect the station itself for any damage. As soon as we can share more news on timescales, we will."
First Minister John Swinney MSP has been speaking at the scene of the fire, adding:
“This has been a very, very serious fire in the proximity of Central Station in Glasgow.
“I want to express my warmest thanks to the emergency services for dealing with a truly horrific incident, a very severe incident, and doing it with such pace and such effectiveness.
“The fact that there are no serious injuries reported is a huge relief, but the damage is enormous and the disruption will be significant to the travelling public and around the city centre.
“The government recognises that there will be a significant financial cost arising out of this incident.
“We’re in the early days of all of that. But I want to signal our willingness to support Glasgow City Council and to support them financially in dealing with the consequences, which will be immediate, significant and unexpected.”
