Vikingar!

Several Largs constituents have been in touch expressing their ambition to see Vikingar! in Largs upgraded.

The general sentiment is that Vikingar! remains a valued but underutilised, slightly shabby community asset, and that further refurbishment and creative programming could help unlock its potential.

This prompted a wider discussion involving Largs Community Council about the condition and future of Vikingar!

Several members expressed disappointment at the lack of broader investment in the site, beyond the welcome improvements to the café.

While KA Leisure manage the day-to-day operation of Vikingar, the responsibility for major repairs and capital investment lies primarily with North Ayrshire Council.

Following contact with KA Leisure to convey constituents’ suggestions and request clarity on intended refurbishment works, I received the following positive update:

“The Vikingar! Centre in Largs is entering an exciting new phase of development, with external improvement works beginning this week.

“Centre Improvements Underway

“Thanks to a grant secured through North Ayrshire Council, the external works will include:

• Replacement of fascia boards, guttering, and downpipes

• Rendering replacement on the front and east side of the building

• Fresh paintwork at the rear, including graffiti removal

• Replacement of all handrails and bollards

“These enhancements mark the beginning of a wider plan to improve the Vikingar! and follow a recent refresh of the sauna entrance area to make the space more inviting and welcoming for users.

“The developments are part of our ongoing commitment to improving the overall experience at Vikingar!, ensuring our facilities remain comfortable and well-maintained.

Looking Ahead: Café Reopening & Community Collaboration

“Preparations are also underway for the reopening of the Vikingar! café in Autumn 2025, with plans to create a vibrant, community-focused space.

“We’re working closely with Largs Community Council to explore new activities and programmes that will encourage greater local participation.

“Building on the popular programme of the Barrfields Theatre Group, Vikingar! will also expand its offering by hosting additional live performances from music bands and individual artists—bringing more entertainment to the venue.

“To further enhance our family-friendly programme, Vikingar! has invested in dryside inflatable equipment, including bouncy castle/slides.

“These will support a refreshed birthday party experience and introduce new weekly sessions for children and families.”

I’m delighted that this work will be undertaken, greatly improving the facility for both residents and visitors.
