Council Tax Reduction Helps 17,410 North Ayrshire Households

It has been revealed that the SNP Government’s Council Tax Reduction Scheme helps 17,410 North Ayrshire households each month.

Scotland’s Chief Statistician has just released the latest figures.

Since its introduction by the SNP Government in 2013, many low income families living in high band properties already received a reduction in their council tax reduction.

Living up to its Holyrood 2016 manifesto commitment, the SNP Government extended the programme to put in place an exemption for higher-band households with below average earnings, up to a maximum of £25,000 net income. This exempts a further 54,000 households across Scotland, a third of them pensioner households.

Kenneth Gibson MSP commented:

“With another £239 million of Tory cuts coming Scotland’s way next year, it is real measures like this that will make a difference for many families across North Ayrshire and beyond.”

"The SNP Government continues to provide the majority of additional funding to local authorities to ensure those in receipt of Council Tax Reduction are protected from the 10% cut on these funds imposed by the UK Tory Government last year, to limit the loss of income for local authorities.

“We will also continue to protect low income households with children through our extended Council Tax Reduction Scheme, directly assisting low income households by an average of £173 per year; households which include 140,000 children.”
