Scotland’s wildlife will benefit from increased protection thanks to a new law passed by the Scottish Parliament, despite the Tories voting against it.
The Wildlife Management and Muirburn Bill includes a range of measures to tackle raptor persecution and ensure that the management of species on grouse moors is undertaken sustainably and with animal welfare as a priority.
The bill will implement the recommendations of the independent review of grouse moor management by:
1. Banning snaring and glue traps in Scotland
2. Giving greater powers to Scottish SPCA inspectors to tackle wildlife crime
3. Introducing a new licensing framework for grouse moors
4. Strictly regulating the use of Muirburn, the controlled burning of vegetation on peatland
