While the energy crisis is a global one, shoddy and short-sighted decision making by successive UK Governments has left us exposed to even higher gas prices.
Despite being more reliant on gas than most of our European neighbours, Westminster’s senseless closure of gas storage sites leaves the UK with a mere nine days of supply – while countries like France, Germany and the Netherlands have supplies that last for months.
All of this means that, during periods of high demand, the UK is forced to buy gas at market prices – sometimes up to 800% higher – just to keep the lights on.
As always, these prices are ultimately passed on to consumers.
