Scottish Opera Comes to Largs

Saturday night saw magnificent performances at Barrfields by artists Ross Cumming, Inna Husieva, Lea Shaw and Shengzhi Ren, backed on piano by Musical Director James Longford.

Largs was the last of 19 Opera Highlights shows which make opera accessible to local communities on a tour that began in Greenock in mid-February, following on from 17 locations last autumn.

Opera Highlights traversed the length and breadth of Scotland, from Stornoway in the Western Isles to Duns in the Scottish Borders in the last few weeks alone.

Small halls are the order of the day, often accommodating only a hundred or so people. Indeed, Barrfields was the biggest, with 270 tickets sold.

The programme ranged far and wide, with arias, duets and ensembles from operas ranging from Verdi and Puccini to Tchaikovsky, Mozart and the contemporary Toby Hession.

Humour and joy diffused the entire evening.

Afterwards, I spoke to an 84-year-old constituent who enthused that, although it was her first trip to the opera, it won’t be her last! I encouraged her and her daughter to see La Traviata, in May.
